What Democrats Are Doing to Hold Trump 2.0 Accountable
Welcome to this week’s edition of THE REPORT. Every week, The Watchdog Report will give a quick look at the oversight actions taken by Democrats in Congress and outside allies.
BREAKING: Senate Judiciary Committee cancels vote on Blanche AG nomination amid GOP opposition
Rep. Jamie Raskin, Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee, wrote to Gianni Infantino, President of FIFA, launching an investigation into mounting evidence of corruption and a potential quid pro quo between FIFA and the Trump Administration. The investigation examines a sustained campaign by FIFA to secure special favors from President Trump—including the dismissal of high-profile corruption cases involving hundreds of millions of dollars related to FIFA—all while gouging American consumers for exorbitant prices during the World Cup.
U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), a member of the Senate Finance Committee, released new responses from Trump-affiliated companies regarding President Donald Trump’s corrupt deal with the Treasury Department (Treasury) and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The responses came as a result of the investigation Warren launched alongside Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Senator Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), Ranking Member of the Senate Finance Committee, earlier this month. The senators sent letters to eleven organizations. Six — Trump Media and Technology Group, Polymarket, Kalshi, American Bitcoin, Powerus, and Kaz Resources — responded by suggesting they were not involved with or granted immunity by the controversial order. Five companies, including the Trump Organization, World Liberty Financial, and 1789 Capital — organizations with very close ties to Trump or his family — refused to respond.
Sens. Warren (D-Mass.), Ranking Member of the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee, and Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) sent a letter to Paul Atkins, Chair of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), calling on the SEC to investigate the Trump Media & Technology Group (“Trump Media”)’s reported plan to sell Wall Street firms faster access to the President’s market-moving posts on Truth Social in exchange for huge fees. The Senators urged the SEC to determine whether the proposed arrangement would violate applicable federal securities laws.
Warren (D-Mass.), Ranking Member of the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee, Representative Ro Khanna (D-Calif.), and Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Ill.), both members of the House Oversight Committee, sent a letter to Nigel Higgins, Group Chairman at Barclays, pressing for more details into the bank’s efforts to investigate the professional and personal relationship between former Barclays CEO Jes Staley and disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.
Rep. Robert Garcia, Ranking Member of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, demanded answers from Taylor Farms CEO Bruce Taylor about the company’s role in the national cyclosporiasis outbreak that has sickened thousands of Americans, and whether the company used its political donations and White House connections to interfere with the Food and Drug Administration’s investigation into the contaminated food supply.
