What Democrats Are Doing to Hold Trump 2.0 Accountable

Welcome to this week’s edition of THE REPORT. Every Wednesday, The Watchdog Report will give a quick look at the oversight actions taken by Democrats in Congress and outside allies.

• Rep. Jamie Raskin, Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee, wrote to White House Physician Captain Sean Barbabella seeking information regarding President Donald Trump’s unexplained symptoms and frequent hospital visits after a Washington Post report revealed that the President is being seen by an eye-popping 22 medical specialists.

• Senate Democratic Leaders Call for Hearings into Extent of Donald Trump, Trump Family, and Senior Trump Administration Officials’ Cashing in on Foreign Crypto Deals

• U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) pressed Dr. Erich Hernandez-Baquero, a current Raytheon executive nominated for Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Space Acquisition and Integration, to make a series of ethics commitments, including recusing himself for four years from all matters related to his former employer, committing to not work for a defense contractor for four years after leaving government service, and commit to not lobby the Department of Defense (DoD) for at least four years after leaving his new role. If confirmed, and absent these commitments, Hernandez-Baquero could help determine whether Raytheon, a massive defense contractor, receives Air Force contracts.

• Warren, along with Senator Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), pressed President Donald Trump and Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on the Trump Administration’s new website, Moms.gov, which directs pregnant women and their loved ones to unregulated and often nonmedical anti-abortion facilities known as crisis pregnancy centers (CPCs).

• Warren and Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR), and three of their Senate colleagues sent a letter to the Treasury Department’s Office of the Inspector General (OIG) calling on the watchdog to investigate the resources the Treasury Department has devoted to developing a $250 bill featuring President Trump’s image — a currency that would be illegal to issue under current federal law. The letter was also signed by Senators Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), Ron Wyden (D-OR), and Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY).

• Warren and Senators Raphael Warnock (D-GA), Andy Kim (D-NJ), and Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-DE) wrote to Acting Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) Russell Vought pressing for additional information on the deletion of almost 15 years of content from the CFPB website – including all press releases, testimony, and speeches published before President Trump’s second term, as well as consumer advisories, notices of settlements on behalf of consumers, original research, and major reports. The Senators also asked for information on the steps that Acting Director Vought will take to restore access to deleted information that helps protect American consumers from financial predation.

• The Minority Staff of the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee released a new report detailing how officials and entities affiliated with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) made unprecedented investments in the Trump family’s cryptocurrency company World Liberty Financial (WLF), and how the Trump Administration subsequently took at least 10 policy actions benefiting the UAE—despite serious economic and national security concerns.

• Rep. Robert Garcia, Ranking Member of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, demanded answers from Green Water Solutions and Atlantic Industrial Coatings regarding President Trump’s failed renovations to the reflecting pool on the National Mall, which is now filled with algae and has paint chipping despite costing taxpayers $14 million. The National Park Service awarded these companies non-competitive contracts, bypassing the competitive-bidding process that is typically required and that helps lower costs for taxpayers. Both contractors have ties to Trump entities.

• Democrats on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, released a new 105 page report detailing how the Trump Administration has broken its “Make America Healthy Again” promises and is instead making American children and families more vulnerable to disease, illness, and preventable death.
